It is a common misconception that persons living
together as husband and wife have the same legal rights and
responsibilities as a married couple.
The law makes some very critical distinctions between a
married couple and a couple who are cohabiting. There is no
automatic parcel of rights that attach to being what is commonly
called a " common law wife" and there are serious
consequences for both parties to the relationship from a decision
to marry or not.
